Artist to Watch: Jorja Smith
Jorja Smith is a young British singer from the West Midlands. She has just bagged the Brits Critics Choice Award (2018) and has released her latest single “Let Me Down ft Stormzy”.
Her first ever release was in 2016 on Soundcloud for the track “Blue Lights” which currently has over 3M views and was nominated as Best Song at the 2016 MOBO Awards.
This was followed by single “A Prince” with Maverick Sabre and “Where Did I Go” which was chosen by the one and only Drake as his favourite track.
End of 2016 Jorja officially released her first EP ‘Project 11’ which included 4 tracks. Fast forward to March 2017 , she was featured on two tracks from Drakes album “More Life”.
This was followed by her own single release for the track “Beautiful Little Fools”
By now it must have become pretty clear that Jorja is influenced by artists like Mos Def to Lauryn Hill and The Streets. Her soulful vocal style has been compared to Amy Winehouse, Rihanna, Lauryn Hill and FKA Twigs.
Having now joined the prestigious list of Brit Award winners she told BirminghamLive that “It’s such an honour to have received this award and recognition amongst so much amazing emerging UK Talent. It was also great to to be part of an all-female shortlist alongside Mabel and Stefflon Don.”
Her music is supported by Radio 1, 1Xtra and Beats and she definitely one to watch!
